WebMalthusian Models and Irish History JOEL MOKYR Malthusian models occupy a central position in the interpretation and analysis of long-term economic and demographic change in preindustrial societies. The models are logically plausible and attractive, but ultimately they will have to be confronted with systematic evidence before being accepted. WebMalthus describes it as follows: the actual distresses of some of the lower classes, by which they are disabled from giving the proper food and attention to their children, act as a positive check to the natural increase of population. This is the mechanism that we will focus on in our description of the model.
